Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences School of Rural Health

The teaching program

The Rural Clinical School offers excellent exposure to common problems and continuity of care. Current students have found that patient access is excellent. The patients are very supportive and keen to see students. The coordination of the rotations is designed to provide the best teaching, continue to provide good access to patients, and to limit stress on resources in the hospitals and their departments. Students have access to the Emergency Department, out patients, operating theatre, and may have opportunities to accompany specialists when they visit smaller rural hospitals.

Most of our tutors are academics and local specialists who deliver tutorials in their area of interest and specialty. General practitioners, nursing staff, and allied health staff teach in their particular areas of skill. Hospital Medical Officers and Specialist Registrars are also a valuable part of our teaching program. Visiting specialists from Melbourne provide some local teaching and selected tutorials are delivered by video-conference. There are many additional educational opportunities at the respective hospitals that students are welcomed. Students are encouraged to be active members in their learning experience and we welcome feedback and new ideas.
