Cobram

Cobram, a rural town situated on the southern bank of Murray River, in northern Victoria. It is located 67 km north of Shepparton in the Murray Goulburn irrigation district. The town has an area of 7 sq. km with a population of 4554 according to 2001 census. There are orchards (mainly peach, pear and apple) on three sides of the town, and the Murray River and a linear State forest on the north-east side. The town is linked to Barooga, on the opposite side of the river in New South Wales. Peaceful oasis of Cobram is the attraction of many visitors.

Cobram was the name of a pastoral station taken up by Octavius Phillpotts in 1845. It is thought that the name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning head, and that Cobram was the head pastoral station in the district.

The warm temperate climate of this region helps to produce Australia's best peaches and nectarines. The wineries of the region are also well reputed for the quality.
Major attraction of the town includes sale yards, show grounds, extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities, beaches on the Murray River, a co-operative cheese and butter factory, Barooga Sports Club, Quinn Island Flora and Fauna Reserve, Matata Deer Farm and Wineries.

Accommodation in Cobram fulfils all needs and tastes with a good selection of motels, caravan parks, resort (RACV Club Cobram), BBQ places and luxury self-contained units. Bush-walking tracks, boat tours, fishing spots are also available in Cobram.
Cobram is approximately one hour drive from Shepparton, via Wyndham Street, Goulburn Valley Highway, Katamatite Shepparton Road, Benalla Tocumwal Road, Cobram South Road, Murray Valley Highway, Koonoomoo Road and Broadway Street.
