Kilmore is the oldest settled inland town in Victoria. It is on the Northern Highway, just off the Hume Highway and is the first large town out of Melbourne going north. The town is about one and half hour drive (126 kilometres) from Shepparton (via Goulburn Valley Highway, Hume Highway, Broadford Kilmore Road, Northern Highway And Kilmore Lancefield Road) and less than one hour from the heart of Melbourne. The train runs from Melbourne-Shepparton but doesn't stop at Kilmore-Seymour is the closest station and you need to change trains. Train services to Kilmore leave from Spencer Street (V-line). The trip takes approx 55 minutes and during the week there would be 6-8 trains per day. The nearest railway station is at Kilmore East, which is 10 minutes away by car and no public transport is available to go to the hospital. It is also in a quiet location. The town has an area of 7.2 square kilometres and 3632 people live there. It offers a country lifestyle. Historic buildings and landmarks of early settlement attract interest of many tourists and exploration. Hume and Hovell passed through this district on their epic journey and a monument marks their part in the history Kilmore town.
Kilmore town provides for golf course, recreation (sports, swimming pool, squash centre), visits to nearby vineyards, and multiple heritage listed buildings. It is a major centre for racing and trotting and conference facilities hosting over 30 race meetings every year.
